Dr. Klemes (b. 1964) is a married father of two teenage daughters, and a General Practitioner living in Sydney. Paul wintered at Macquarie Island as medical officer, station photographer and quarantine officer in 1996 (49th ANARE) and was also engaged in human immunology research, the 1996 elephant seal census, rat research and upper atmospheric readings. He is the founder and winner (in the record time of 4hrs42mins) of the inaugural Macquarie Island Marathon; the first ever 35km end to end race on Macquarie Island- Australian Geographic July-Sept 1998. Paul works at Avalon Family Medical Practice and Gateway Medical Centre on the Northern Beaches with a special interest in Youth and Mental Health. He regularly facilitates the Doctors in Schools Program (U Connect Health) Sydney North Shore and Beaches Medicare Local. Paul has recently worked as surgical assistant to Dr. Les Grujic, foot and ankle surgeon. From 2000 to 2002 he was part of a seven doctor team working in the remote Canadian ski town of Kimberley in British Columbia. Dr Klemes has lifelong experience in challenging bush and snow country, ski touring and snow camping in wilderness areas of Australia, Canada and Macquarie Island as well as cycle touring in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Czech Republic and United States. In 1990 Paul cycle toured 10,000km around Europe. His current passion is cycling on road bikes 180km per week with a small group of like minded men from Avalon. Last month he completed the six day, 840km Taronga Zoo to Dubbo Zoo and return ride fund raising for the Black Dog Institute.
